🚿 Unit Types & Selection
What’s the actual difference between a standard, deluxe, and luxury unit?
A standard unit has no flush and no sink, just a self-contained holding tank, and it is the most common booking for construction sites. A deluxe unit adds a real flush and a sink with running water, at a modest price increase, and is a popular step up for corporate events and backyard weddings. A luxury restroom trailer is an entirely different category: real walls, real flooring, climate control, mirrors, and multiple stalls, built for formal events where guest experience matters as much as function. There is no single right answer. It comes down to guest count, event formality, and budget.
Is an ADA-compliant unit really different from a standard unit with a wider door?
Yes, and this is one of the most common misconceptions in the industry. A genuine ADA-compliant unit is built from the ground up to the 2010 ADA Standards, with real wheelchair turning clearance inside, grab rails positioned to spec, a lower fixture height, and reinforced flooring rated for the added weight and movement. Simply widening the door on a standard unit and calling it accessible does not meet the actual standard, even though some rental companies still market it that way.
What is a hoistable unit and who actually needs one?
A high-rise hoistable unit is reinforced for crane or hoist lifting to upper floors of a multi-story construction project, with secured attachment points a standard unit does not have. It solves a real productivity problem: a crew working the 15th floor that has to descend to street level for every bathroom break loses measurable time across an entire shift, multiplied by every worker on that floor, every single day. Most Richmond rental companies do not offer this at all.
Do I need a separate handwashing station, or does a deluxe unit’s sink cover it?
If your crew is handling chemicals, adhesives, or anything else that OSHA classifies as requiring rinse-off access, a deluxe unit’s sink can satisfy that if it is close enough to the actual work area. For larger crews spread across a bigger site, or for standard units with no sink at all, a dedicated handwashing station rental is the more practical solution, since it gives everyone quick access without a bottleneck at one unit.
How many units do I actually need for my crew or guest count?
For construction, OSHA’s practical standard works out to roughly one unit per 20 to 25 workers on-site. For events, a single standard or deluxe unit comfortably serves 50 to 75 guests over a few hours; larger or longer events should plan two units spread across the venue rather than one everyone has to walk to. Call with your specific numbers and we will size it accurately instead of you guessing.
💰 Pricing & Cost
How much does a porta potty rental actually cost in Richmond?
Standard units run $80 to $225 depending on rental length: shorter weekend or single-day event rentals sit toward the lower end for smaller bookings, while ongoing weekly construction rentals average $100 to $225 per week. Deluxe units run modestly higher for the added flush and sink, ADA units run roughly 10 to 20 percent above standard, and luxury restroom trailers and high-rise hoistable units are quoted individually based on guest count, building height, and crane coordination since no flat number honestly captures that variation.
Do you charge extra for delivery outside Richmond city limits?
No. Our full metro coverage area, including Henrico, Chesterfield, Glen Allen, Midlothian, and Mechanicsville, is priced identically to Richmond city. Some rental companies in this market only serve city limits or add a distance surcharge past a certain radius. We do not, and we would rather lose a job than pretend our pricing is something it is not.
Does the per-week rate drop for longer rentals?
Yes. A unit booked for a two-month construction project genuinely costs less per week than the same unit booked for a single isolated week. If you are not certain how long your project will run, give us your best estimate. We would rather adjust the schedule later than have you overpay upfront for a duration you are not sure about.
Are there hidden fees that show up on the invoice later?
No. The price we quote is the price on your invoice. If your specific site needs something extra, like a generator for a trailer with no accessible power, we itemize that clearly upfront rather than surprising you after delivery.
📋 OSHA & Compliance
What does OSHA actually require for job site toilets?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 sets the construction sanitation standard: one toilet for every 20 workers when the crew is 20 or fewer, and one toilet plus one urinal per 40 workers for crews between 21 and 200. This is the specific regulation we size every construction order against, not a rough guess.
Does hand sanitizer satisfy the OSHA handwashing requirement?
No. OSHA’s sanitation standard requires real soap and running water when workers handle chemicals, adhesives, or other substances that need to be rinsed off. Hand sanitizer alone does not meet this requirement, even though it is a common shortcut sites try to take to avoid the cost of a dedicated handwashing station.
Who is actually responsible if a job site fails an OSHA sanitation inspection?
The employer and general contractor bear that responsibility, not the rental company. That said, we would rather help you get the ratio and unit type right upfront than have you find out about a gap during an actual inspection. Tell us your real crew size and we will size the order to the regulation, not to what looks cheapest on a quote.
Do the OSHA ratios apply the same way to elevated crews on high-rise projects?
Yes, the same regulation applies regardless of floor level. The practical difference is logistics, not the rule itself. That is exactly why our high-rise hoistable units exist, to make compliance realistic for crews working upper floors instead of forcing an unreasonable descent for every break.
🚚 Delivery & Service Area
What areas do you actually cover, not just advertise?
Richmond city and the full surrounding metro: Henrico County, Chesterfield County, Glen Allen, Midlothian, and Mechanicsville, plus every Richmond neighborhood from Shockoe Bottom and The Fan to Church Hill and Scott’s Addition. Call with your exact address if you are unsure, and we will tell you honestly if it is a stretch for our normal routes rather than accepting a booking we cannot service well.
How fast can you actually deliver, same-day or not?
Same-day delivery is available in most cases if you call early in the day, before our routes for that area are already finalized. Next-day is the reliable standard otherwise. Dense, frequently serviced neighborhoods like downtown and The Fan tend to have the fastest turnaround simply because our trucks are already routed through them constantly.
Can you deliver to a site with limited or tight street access?
Yes, this comes up often in older Richmond neighborhoods with narrow streets, like parts of The Fan and Church Hill. Tell us the specific address when you book, and we will confirm realistic placement, including alley or rear access options, before delivery day rather than discovering a problem when the truck arrives.
Do you handle multi-site or multi-unit orders across several addresses?
Yes, we regularly coordinate service across multiple active lots for homebuilders and multiple locations for property managers, running one consistent schedule rather than treating each address as a separate booking you have to manage individually.
🔧 Servicing & Maintenance
How often is a rented unit actually serviced?
Weekly servicing is standard for ongoing rentals, matching the same schedule for any paired handwashing station. During Richmond’s summer heat, or for high-traffic events, we recommend a mid-week refill of fresh water and soap. High-traffic events should plan for daily servicing during multi-day festivals.
What actually happens during a service visit?
Waste tank pump-out, fresh water refill, soap and paper towel restock where applicable, and a cleaning pass on interior surfaces and fixtures. Our technician also checks door hardware and structural condition, and flags anything that needs attention beyond routine servicing.
What if a unit needs attention between scheduled service visits?
Call us and we will address it, whether that means an off-schedule visit or a swap. A unit that genuinely needs attention before the next scheduled stop is not something we make you wait on.
Can I request a different servicing schedule than the default weekly visit?
Yes, tell us your expected usage and we will adjust. A large event needing daily service or a low-traffic site that could stretch to biweekly are both reasonable requests, and we would rather match the real schedule to actual need than default blindly to once a week.
💍 Events & Weddings
How far ahead should I book for a Richmond wedding?
Ideally three to six months out, especially for a luxury restroom trailer during fall wedding season between September and November, which is genuinely our busiest stretch for trailer bookings. Deluxe and standard units have more flexibility, but earlier booking always gives you better odds at your preferred delivery window.
What happens if it rains on my event day?
Our units are weatherproof and, for the luxury trailer, fully climate controlled regardless of outside conditions. We only ask that delivery access paths stay reasonably clear, and we will coordinate timing with your venue if heavy rain is forecast for setup day.
Do I need an attendant on-site during my event?
Not by default, though we can arrange an on-site attendant for an additional fee for larger events where someone actively monitoring supplies and cleanliness throughout the evening adds real value, particularly for weddings running past dark.
Can I see real photos of the exact unit before booking my wedding?
Yes, ask us for current photos of the specific unit type you are considering. We would rather show you the actual unit than a stock photo that oversells what will show up on your day.
Is a deluxe unit or a luxury trailer the right call for my guest count?
Under roughly 75 to 100 guests, one or two deluxe units genuinely cover most needs well. Past that number, or for a formal event where guest experience matters more, a full luxury restroom trailer starts to make more sense for both capacity and impression.
🏗️ Construction Sites
Can you service multiple active lots across a new subdivision?
Yes, this is one of our most common construction bookings. We coordinate one consistent schedule across an entire development rather than treating each lot as a separate order, adjusting unit count as phases open and close.
Do you offer bulk pricing for large multi-unit orders?
Yes, multi-unit orders for larger construction sites get volume pricing. Call with your crew size and project timeline and we will put together an accurate quote rather than a generic per-unit estimate.
Is a permit required to place a standard unit on a construction site?
Generally no for private property construction sites. The situation changes for placement on public right-of-way or city sidewalks, where Richmond may require a temporary use permit. We can help you figure out which category your placement falls into.
How do I plan porta potty needs for a project with several general contractors working simultaneously?
Call us to set up a coordinated schedule. We regularly work with multiple contractors active on the same site, keeping servicing efficient across the whole project rather than each contractor booking separately and duplicating coverage.
Porta Potty Rental Richmond FAQs | Seasonal & Weather
Does hurricane season actually affect delivery in Richmond?
Yes, genuinely. The James River floodway runs through parts of Richmond, most notably Shockoe Bottom, and the risk of flooding rises meaningfully between mid-August and mid-October. We monitor river conditions during this window and will flag placement concerns before delivery day if your site sits in a known low spot, rather than leaving a unit somewhere it could end up standing in water.
How does Richmond’s summer heat affect servicing needs?
Higher temperatures increase odor buildup and water usage faster than in cooler months. We recommend a mid-week refill on top of standard weekly servicing during peak summer for both porta potties and handwashing stations, and we are happy to set that up proactively rather than waiting for a complaint.
Do winter conditions cause any delivery or servicing issues?
Occasional ice or snow can affect delivery timing on the rare Richmond winter storm day, but this is uncommon enough in our climate that it is not a routine planning factor the way summer heat or fall flood risk are. We will communicate proactively if weather genuinely affects your specific delivery window.
Should I plan differently for an outdoor event during peak festival season?
Yes. Richmond’s spring and fall festival calendar, especially around Shockoe Bottom, Scott’s Addition, and Brown’s Island, books up our event inventory faster than off-season months. Reach out earlier than you think you need to if your event falls during a known busy stretch.
📌 Permits & Placement
Do I need a city permit to place a unit on my own property?
In most cases, no. Private property placement, including backyards and active construction sites, generally does not require a permit. The situation changes for public right-of-way, city sidewalks, or public park placement for an event, where a temporary use permit may be required.
Who is responsible for securing a permit if one is needed?
The customer or event organizer is generally responsible for securing any required permit. We can help you figure out whether your specific placement needs one, but the application itself is typically on your end.
What ground conditions does a unit actually need for safe placement?
Reasonably level, stable ground. This matters more in Richmond’s hillier neighborhoods, like Church Hill, where our team will walk the property with you if needed to find the best spot rather than placing a unit somewhere that looks fine from the truck but is not actually stable.
Can placement be adjusted after delivery if the original spot does not work?
Yes, call us and we will come adjust it. We would rather fix a placement issue quickly than leave a unit somewhere inconvenient or unsafe just because it matched the original plan.
Porta Potty Rental Richmond FAQs | Health & Sanitation
What’s actually inside a portable handwashing station?
A genuine fresh water supply tank, a foot-pump or hands-free mechanism so nobody touches a dirty handle after washing, a real liquid soap dispenser, and a separate wastewater tank that keeps used water contained rather than draining onto the ground. Standard units are entirely self-contained and need no electrical hookup.
Are units actually cleaned between different rental customers?
Yes, every unit is cleaned and inspected before it leaves our yard for a new rental, checking door hardware, flooring, and interior surfaces, not just a quick rinse. ADA units specifically get their grab rails and clearance checked as part of that inspection, since accessibility features are never treated as an afterthought.
Is it safe to rent a food-adjacent handwashing station for a festival or food truck event?
Yes, this is a common and appropriate booking for food vendor events, since accessible handwashing with real soap and water is a genuine public health basic for anyone handling food for the public, not an optional extra.
What happens to the waste after pump-out, is it disposed of properly?
Yes, waste is transported and disposed of through licensed, regulated waste handling channels as required, not dumped informally. This is a standard, non-negotiable part of how any legitimate portable sanitation company operates.
Do units get treated with deodorizer, and is that chemical safe?
Yes, standard blue deodorizer treatment is applied during servicing to control odor between visits. It is a standard sanitation industry product, not a harsh chemical, and it is the same treatment used across the portable sanitation industry broadly.
Real Situations Richmond Customers Have Actually Called Us About
My general contractor says the unit we ordered is too small for our actual crew. What now?
Call us with your real current crew size. We will add units or swap to a larger configuration, sized to the actual OSHA ratio rather than the original estimate, which happens more often than you’d think once a project ramps up past its initial headcount.
A guest at my event flagged that the unit ran out of soap halfway through. How do we prevent that next time?
Tell us your realistic guest count and event length upfront so we can plan supply levels correctly, and ask about a mid-event check for anything running past four or five hours with steady traffic. This is exactly the kind of detail a straight conversation before your event prevents.
I booked a standard unit but my site turned out to need ADA access I did not think about. Can this be fixed before delivery?
Yes, call as soon as you realize this. Swapping before delivery day is simple. Swapping after a standard unit is already on-site means an extra trip, so the earlier you catch it, the smoother the fix.
Our project got delayed and we do not need the unit for another month. What are our options?
Call us to adjust the schedule. We would rather reschedule delivery to match your real project timeline than have a unit sitting unused on a site that is not ready for it yet.
Still have a question we have not covered here? Reach out directly and we will give you a real, specific answer rather than a generic script.
